About Inspire Inkster
Our History
Inspire Inkster is a 501(c)(3) located in Inkster, MI. Starting in February 2024, we identified several needs in the Inkster community related to the community surrounding its local public elementary school. These needs are associated with the students themselves and their associated families and loved ones, and they include:
- Educational: Educational achievement is low in the area, with many needs related to school supplies and academic services going unmet.
- Economic: The students and their households often need support with necessities such as food, clothing, household items, medical needs, shelter, and more.
- Social: Inkster needed a vehicle for promoting a stronger community and relationships between families and their youth and lacked "third spaces" that supported this goal, such as scouting and parent-teacher organizations. These relationships and spaces are critical for supporting students and making sure everyone's needs are met.
It is important for the sustainability of a family, school, and community to address the needs in all of these dimensions. Therefore, as a group of community stakeholders already embedded in the educational process in Inkster, we would love to help meet these needs in order to see the vision described above turn into a reality in our school system in our city. Initially, we decided to support the students of David Hicks Elementary School of Wayne-Westland Community Schools as both a district support organization (DSO) and a parent-teacher organization (PTO) for the school. As time went on, we expanded our programming to serve the broader City of Inkster beyond the school with Scouting America activities, PTO support, free swim lessons, a food pantry, and grants for high school graduates.
