About Inspire Inkster
Our History
Inspire Inkster is a 501(c)(3) located in Inkster, MI. Starting in February 2024, we have identified several needs in the Inkster community that impact its youth and their families. The gap in meeting these needs threaten the overall sustainability of the city, and they include:
- Educational: Educational achievement is low in the area, with a disconnect between families and the school community along with a shortage of wraparound services accessible to youth.
- Economic: The youth and their households often need support with necessities such as food, clothing, household items, medical needs, shelter, and more.
- Social: Inkster needed a vehicle for promoting a stronger community and relationships between families and their youth. However, the city had a gap of "third spaces" that supported this goal and were accessible to larger groups of people. These community relationships and spaces are critical for supporting students and making sure everyone's needs are met.
It is important for the sustainability of a family, school, and community to address the needs in all of these dimensions. Therefore, as a group of community stakeholders already embedded in many areas of Inkster - as teachers and other staff in schools serving its youth, members of community organizations such as churches, families who have an established history with the city, and more - we came together to create Inspire Inkster and to help meet these needs in order to turn our mission and vision statement into a reality.
Initially, we decided to start by supporting one of the school districts serving Inkster (Wayne-Westland Community Schools) as a district support organization (DSO) in order to help provide services to the Inkster youth and families attending one of the local elementary schools. As time went on, we expanded our programming to serve the broader City of Inkster and have built partnerships with additional Inkster organizations and community leaders to support this growth, as well as collaborations with organizations and volunteers outside of Inkster who seek to support our mission statement and help us provide services to the youth.
